Genomics and molecular diagnostics in the 2000s

Before founding Rod Hise & Co. (formerly The Luminis Group) in 2006, Rod was vice president of corporate affairs at Third Wave Technologies, a Nasdaq-traded biotechnology company, where he managed its media, public and investor relations and was a member of the management team. Rod played a key role in successfully repositioning the company after two restructurings and management changes, including reintroducing the company to Wall Street. Third Wave was acquired for 19 times prior-year revenues in 2008 after a 278-percent increase in valuation from the appointment of the new management team in late 2005.

Research that drove strategy

Before joining Third Wave, Rod conducted research and provided strategic communications and public issues counsel to the Minnesota Twins Baseball Club during its first drive for a new ballpark and to Minnesota’s largest health care system during a public crisis stemming from an investigation of it by the state’s attorney general. Solid research was critical to informing the strategy undertaken in both cases, as research and analysis uncovered perceptions and potential outcomes that turned initial thinking about each situation on its head.

Government and politics

Rod spent more than a decade in government and politics at the local, state and federal levels before entering the private sector. He served former Wisconsin Governor Tommy G. Thompson as deputy communications director and managed the operations of the governor’s press office. He also served as special assistant and speechwriter to the mayor of Omaha, Neb., and as political director to the governor of Nebraska.

Education and civic involvement

Rod earned a bachelor’s degree in communications studies with a minor in political science from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He serves on the board of directors of his local chamber of commerce. He is actively involved in the community’s public schools and recently was named a “Friend of Education” by the board of education.

He served on the board of advisors of the University of Wisconsin Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is a past director of the Dean's Advisory Board (University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts), the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation and the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Dane County. For more than a decade, Rod was a USA Hockey-certified youth hockey coach who, in addition to his regular- season coaching, founded and coached several off-season programs.
